Making Women’s Sport Visible: 20 Years of gsport

By Kass Naidoo

What does it take to turn a dream into a movement?

In 2006, pioneering sports broadcaster Kass Naidoo set out to change the way women’s sport was seen, celebrated and recognised in South Africa.

What began as a bold idea became gsport, a platform that would spend the next twenty years telling untold stories, celebrating extraordinary women and championing the power of recognition.

In Making Women’s Sport Visible, Kass takes readers behind the scenes. She shares the triumphs, setbacks, defining moments and relationships that shaped gsport, alongside the sporting milestones and trailblazing women who transformed the landscape.

Part memoir, part history and part entrepreneurial journey, this is a story about building something meaningful, finding your voice and discovering what becomes possible when people come together around a shared purpose.

Above all, it is a celebration of the shared effort to make women’s sport visible.

Twenty years. Countless stories. One collective roar.

About gsport

gsport exists to make sure South African girls and women in sport are seen and heard.

The platform went live on 1 August 2006, founded by cricket broadcaster Kass Naidoo and Ryk Meiring with a simple mission: to raise the profile of women’s sport and encourage greater corporate support.

Since that first day, gsport has championed sportswomen across codes, telling their stories, celebrating their achievements and giving them the coverage and recognition they have earned.

The gsport Awards sit at the heart of that work. What began in 2006 with the gsport Hall of Fame has grown into an annual celebration honouring athletes, teams, coaches, federations, media professionals, sponsors, volunteers and supporters. The 21st gsport Awards in 2026 presented 28 honours, including 20 public categories.

Twenty years on, the gsport Trust carries the work forward with the athletes, administrators, media and partners who turned visibility into a lasting legacy.

About the Author

Kass Naidoo has spent her career making sure women in sport are seen and heard.

A pioneering South African cricket broadcaster, Kass made history in 2003 when she became the country’s first female television cricket commentator. But while she was breaking barriers in her own career, she became increasingly aware of the extraordinary women whose sporting achievements were going largely unnoticed.

In 2006, she and her husband, Ryk Meiring, founded gsport with a simple mission: to raise the profile of women’s sport and encourage greater corporate support.

What began as a small online initiative grew into a powerful platform for storytelling, recognition and celebration, supported by a remarkable community of women and men determined to change the game.

Twenty years later, Kass brings together the people, the breakthroughs, the battles and the unforgettable moments that shaped this journey.

Making Women’s Sport Visible is her debut book. It is both a deeply personal account and a tribute to the community that helped turn visibility into a lasting legacy.
